The stereotype of today’s entrepreneur centers around young, sleek tech startups. If you’re reading about the new and popular businesses, you’re likely to hear about twenty-somethings who have come up with market-busting ideas.
Maybe, you happen to be you’re one of those people—if so, great! This recording is for you- although the bio may not reflect that at first!.
One of my newer friends is San Francisco’s Harry Kaestener, chairman of Soverign’s Capital and one of the leaders of the Faith-Driven Entrepreneur movement. This conversation FDE got to have recently has a certain classic feel to it in the way that believers can maintain integrity while still sustaining success in business.
The interviewee, Drayton McLane, has been blessed to head a family-led logistics operation here in Texas that’s been in business for over a century that is today part of the Berkshire-Hathaway portfolio and was a key player in the logistical growth of the WalMart empire. Drayton was a recent owner of the Houston Astros, a major benefactor to alma-maters Baylor University and Michigan State University, and is currently on the board of directors for the Texas Central Railway Company.
‘Spoiler alert: the lessons communicated in the interview are of the classic variety (many will call them “old school”). They include nuggets like : arriving early any staying late, keeping your word, and demonstrating value by providing it.
And one classic truth buried a little ways in: it’s okay to say “no” to big clients if “yes” means sacrificing who you are as a disciple. No guarantees here, obviously, but you you may even get rewarded materially in the long run. As I personally interact more with people who are looking to leverage entrepreneurship to fuel God’s calling in their personal lives, I’m seeing this as growing challenge in this space.
I’m hoping this conversation will bless your day, and supply you with some of the necessary courage to face it in God’s way.
‘God bless. #HAGDOW
